Philodendron - Hope (Bipinnatifidum)

Description

Native to South America, this beautiful, easy-to-care-for houseplant provides yearlong beauty with its interesting foliage and full silhouette. Hope Philodendrons have a dense, bushy character that can add a tropical feel to your indoor space. Unlike other philodendron varieties, this plant doesn’t climb but instead grows upright. In the correct conditions, this plant can grow to be about 5 feet tall.

Tips

This plant enjoys a high humidity environment with medium or bright light. Brown spots on leaves indicate underwatering.

Lighting Requirements

Philodendron prefer to be in bright, indirect light. If multiple leaves turn yellow, it may be getting too much sunlight. Higher light will help your Philodendron produce more leaves.

Watering Needs

Philodendron requires an average amount of water, usually about once a week. Water your Philodendron when the top inch or two of the soil has dried out. If the leaves are yellowing and drooping, your plant may be receiving too much water. If the leaves are browning and crisping up, they may be getting too little water.

Humidity

Average household humidity levels will be fine for your Philodendron. However, to encourage larger leaf growth increase humidity by misting your plant or wiping the leaves with a damp cloth.

Temperature Preferences

Philodendron grows well in warmer environments, in the 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit range. Keep your Philodendron away from exposure to drafts below 55 degrees.

Fertilizer

Fertilize with a standard balanced houseplant fertilizer once a month in the spring and summer. During the fall and winter, reduce the frequency to every 6-8 weeks. If your philodendron is producing small leaves and growing slowly, this is a sign it requires more nutrients.

Pet-Friendly

Philodendron can cause adverse reactions to pets including vomiting, and skin and mouth irritation. Keep out of reach of animals.
