Pink Pinstripe Calathea

Description

Also known as the Pinstripe Plant (because of the gorgeous pink patterns on its green leaves), the Calathea Ornata can be the next houseplant for you to show off. With its distinctive patterns, the Pin-Stripe Calathea definitely stands out – the pink stripes on top look like they have been painted on, which combine perfectly with the reddish-purple hues on the bottom. An extremely ornamental plant, it can be slightly fussy to care for.

Tips

This plant loves moist soil so regular waterings are needed but puddles should not be allowed to form otherwise root rot can occur. It also needs a high level of humidity to emulate its native tropical environment, using a humidifier or keeping it in the kitchen or bathroom can help with this. The Pin-Stripe Calathea is truly one of a kind and with some care, it can become a wonderful showpiece in your living space!

Lighting Requirements

Your Calathea will thrive in a spot with medium light to bright indirect light – keeping it in front of an east, west, or north window is preferable. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves of the plant and cause its colors to fade.

Watering Needs

To help your Calathea thrive, water it thoroughly and then allow the top inch of soil to dry out a bit until the next watering session. Underwatering the plant and letting it stay dry for too long can result in brown leaf tips and fringes. Overwatering the plant can cause the plant to droop and it will take time to recover.

Humidity

Like other tropical houseplants, your Calathea Medallion likes high humidity. Any brown fringes on the leaves hint at dry air and low humidity. Keep the plant happy by misting the leaves two times a week with regular room temperature water.

Temperature Preferences

They do best between 65-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Indoor temperatures should be at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit and avoid drafts, cross-winds and any sudden temperature fluctuations.

Fertilizer

To help the plant flourish, a general houseplant fertilizer should be used once every 4 weeks in the spring and summer. Fertilizer is not needed in winter as plant growth slows down during this period.

Pet-Friendly

Calathea is considered to be non-toxic to humans, cats, and dogs.

Extra Care

Tap water with dissolved salts, chlorine, and fluoride can lead to burning of the tips and fringes, and slight yellowing of your Calathea Medallion’s leaves. If you do not have access to a filtration system, let the tap water stand uncovered overnight to allow the chlorine and fluoride to dissipate and evaporate. Any completely yellowed leaves should be removed to allow the plant to focus on new foliage and keep growing. Use a damp cloth to clean the leaves regularly and don’t use any special shine or gloss products.
